How This String Name Trainer Works

This trainer builds instant recall of all six guitar string names (E, A, D, G, B, E) and their numbers (6 through 1). No more counting from the top or reciting 'Eddie Ate Dynamite' — the goal is to just know them.

The learning path uses two game types:

  1. Identifier: we point to a string on the fretboard and you name it, either by its note name or its number.
  2. Player: you get a string name or number and tap the correct string on the fretboard or play it on your guitar.

Why This String Name Trainer Is Different

Most guitarists rely on mnemonics like 'Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie' to remember their string names. That works, but it's slow. You're still decoding instead of knowing. This trainer replaces that with instant recall.

The learning path introduces strings gradually and alternates between identifying them and locating them. That two-way practice is what makes the knowledge stick.

Why I built this trainer

String names are one of those first things new guitarists should learn. I built this because it takes very little time to actually learn them properly, and it makes everything else you do on the guitar a little easier once you do.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take?

The full learning path has 13 levels and can be completed in one or two sessions. Most people get through it in about 15-20 minutes.

I already know the mnemonic. Do I need this?
